Google Business Profile: getting found locally.

5 June 2026 · Reading: 5 min

For a local business, the Google Business Profile listing is often worth more than the site: it’s what appears in the map and in “near me” searches. Yet almost no one really makes the most of it. Here’s how.

What it is and why it matters so much

It’s the free listing that shows your business in Google’s map and in the panel on the right of the results: name, hours, phone, photos, reviews. For local searches — “web agency near me”, “florist Bassano” — it’s often the first thing the customer sees. In many cases the person decides whether to contact you or move on to a competitor right here, in seconds, without clicking any further. Google gives more and more room to these listings, especially on mobile, where the local “pack” of three businesses on the map takes up most of the screen. A well-kept listing is therefore not a detail but often the main entrance to your online presence — far more people see it than reach your site, and the cost of doing it well is close to zero.

Fill in everything, really everything

Correct category, up-to-date hours, description, services, service area: every completed field is a signal to Google. A complete listing ranks higher and inspires more trust than a half-finished one. The main category is the trickiest choice: it tells Google what you do and which searches to show you for, so it deserves care, complemented by the relevant secondary categories. Keep opening hours genuinely up to date, holidays included: nothing annoys a customer more than finding “open” and then a closed shutter. Fill in attributes, service area and links too: small details that, added up, make the difference between a listing Google pushes and one it keeps in the background.

Reviews are gold

They’re the factor that most influences clicks and trust. Ask satisfied customers for reviews, and always reply — even to negative ones, politely. An owner who replies shows they’re present. Ask for reviews from happy customers, naturally and at the right moment — right after a job well done — perhaps with a QR code or a direct link that makes it effortless. And reply to all of them: thank those who praise you and handle complaints with courtesy and concrete answers, because an owner who replies politely even to criticism conveys more reliability than one with only silent five-star reviews. Consistency matters more than spikes, and steer clear of fake or bought reviews: Google spots them, removes them and can penalise the listing.

Photos and constant updates

Listings with quality photos get more enquiries. Add real images of the business, the products, the team. And use posts to share news: a lively listing is one Google is happy to show. Add real photos — the entrance, the interior, the products, the team at work — and avoid stock images, which are easy to spot and cool the visitor down. A strong cover and a crisp logo help you stand out in the local pack, where you have only a few pixels to make an impression. A listing that’s updated often is one Google shows more willingly than one that’s been still for months.

Profile and site work together

The listing brings enquiries, the site turns them into customers: consistent hours, the same address, links that work. When profile and site reinforce each other, your local presence becomes hard to ignore. We can look after both. The information must match everywhere — identical name, address and phone on the profile, the site and other online listings — because even small inconsistencies confuse Google and undermine the trust of anyone checking. From the profile, links should lead to the right pages of the site, and the site in turn gives room to what won’t fit in the listing: catalogues, case studies, a contact form. When profile and site reinforce each other, your local presence becomes hard to ignore.
